Eskimo North

Connecting to Eskimo North with Windows 95/98

The following are comprehensive instructions on getting Win95 to connect to Eskimo North.

Alternately, O'Reilly & Associates Inc. has made chapter 6 ("Dial-out PPP Setup") of their Using & Managing PPP book available on thier website, including Windows 95/98 instructions:

Most of the components needed were probably installed with Windows 95. If you need to install any of the components, you will need the CD Rom release of Win95 accomplish this with minimal effort.

Step 1: The Control Panel

Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel:

Double-click on the "Network" icon. You should see a window that looks like this:

Network2.gif

Now, you may not have all of those items in your "Network" window. We are primarily concerned with 2 specific files: "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter". Look in in the section titled "The Following Network Protocols are installed"... If you see those files listed, you may simply proceed to Step 2.

If you do not have "Dial-Up Adapter"...you can add it. Click on the "Add" button. You should see a window like this:

Select "Adapter" and click "Add"...and you will see a window like this:

Network4.gif

Select "Microsoft" and "Dial-Up Adapter"...then click "OK"...

If you do not have "TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter"...you can add it. Click on the "Add" button. You should see a window like this:

Network5.gif

Select "Protocol" and click "Add"...and you will see a window like this:

Network6.gif

Select "Microsoft" and "TCP/IP"...then click "OK"...then "OK" again...and finally, you should be asked to restart your computer. You may want to restart...or you can complete the setup and restart when you are finished.

Step 2: TCP/IP Properties

It is always a good idea to check the TCP/IP Properties. Depending one the last step you completed, you are most likely either in the "Control Panel"...or in the "Network" window. If you are in the "Control Panel," double click on "Network" again to get back there.

Double-click on TCP/IP to bring up the "TCP/IP Properties"...
Under the "IP Address" tab, Select "Obtain an IP address automatically"...

Under the "DNS Configuration" tab, Select "Disable DNS"...

Note: Some later versions of Dialup Networking may not correctly use settings specified in the Dialup Networking entries. If the above setup results in errors finding our hosts, you may need to specify the name servers here in the Network Control Panel. In order to do this in this window, choose to "Enable DNS", enter your email login name as the "Host", enter "eskimo.com" as the domain, enter the name server addresses (one at a time) into the dotted entry bar, and click "Add" (for both addresses). The addresses should be "204.122.16.8" and "204.122.16.9".

Under the "Gateway" tab, be sure there are no "Installed gateways"...

You do not need to check "Advanced," "Bindings," or "WINS Configuration."
You can now close the "Network" window and the "Control Panel"...
